What is tooth whitening?
Tooth whitening is a method of lightening the natural colour of teeth by using a gel of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which breaks down and permeates into the enamel and dentine to change their colour, without removing any of the tooth surface. This can be carried out in the surgery or at home.
Surgery Whitening
We put a rubber shield or a gel on your gums to protect the soft tissue and then apply the whitening product to your teeth. Then a special light is shone on the teeth to activate the chemical. This procedure takes around 1 hour for both jaws.
Home Whitening
We will take simple impressions to make a mouthguard. You need to regularly apply the whitening product in the mouthguard over two to four weeks period for at least one hour at a time to have an effective result.

Are there any damaging side effects of whitening?
Research and experience have found that the main side effect is transient sensitivity, especially in patients who already have teeth which are particularly sensitive to cold.
How long does the whitening last?
The whitening can last up to three years. However, this will vary from person to person. The effect is less likely to last as long if you smoke, or eat or drink products that can stain your teeth such as coffee, tea and curry. However, it is easier to bring the colour back with 1 or 2 sessions of home whitening.
